new carrier, shoretel phone system, call quality
switched to a new phone carrier @ work
had issues with 'robotic' and severely degraded phone quality
people were calling it 'staticky' but it wasn't like analog static it was like the signal was being extremely compressed, like a very low fidelity mp3 file or something
after looking at the SIP SDP headers coming in and out of the SBC I was able to determine that for some fucked up reason the carrier was offering me G729 and even though my phone system was specifically configured so that it was g711 only, something was either accepting and transcoding or accepting and, i guess, g729 is just shit, passing through
anyways
the sbc has an option to modify the SDP part of the SIP protocol so that G729 (or whatever codecs) are completely nuked, any trace of them gone, making it appear g711 is the only option
doing this instantly fixed the problem!
