thoughts on musical form

changing thoughts over time as we change into someone else over time

1. keep it formless, let builds and breaks happen naturally, never forced, and know when to ride a groove, forever, if necessary

 2. don't contrive to create beforehand with preconceptions of some existing idea.  i.e. don't go around carefully selecting the elements you will use to create a certain sound/effect/emotion.  i mean, you can, i'm not doing that.  to this effect

    a. keep handy the things you use a lot, know where your favorite things are and how to get them

    b. grab whatever is around in the absence of the exact thing you imagined, play with it, get to know it --         make it fit

3. never follow the circle of fifths, if you can, never even maintain a consistent chord 'progression', maybe have a core of some handful of root notes for each song, a central rhythm, at most

4. when possible be monotonic, be rhythmic

5. where the sound is from, and how it is played, is everything, the notes it plays are relevant only because they come from somewhere too (context)
