linux remote desktop for people who do actual work
linux remote desktop sucks, has always sucked, and will probably always suck. and if you complain about it you get a bunch of dipshits recommending solutions that dont work that they clearly have never tried.
lets talk about what doesnt work first. kde has a rdp plugin that doesnt work. you can install it and configure it to your hearts delight, and somehow they decided it would be cool for it to have its own authentication inside of it instead of using system authentication, cool administration nightmare in the making.
you can configure this and open the ports and then connect to it and enter your password and GET A BLACK SCREEN. you have been able to do this for something like 10 years, i wouldn't hold out hope that it's going to be working anytime soon. ive tried with every possible version of mstsc and freerdp and no dice..
gnome 48 has a remote desktop and if you use this with wayland you will have two fun surprises. the first surprise is that, at least of this writing, every single linux distro on earth with gnome 48 will crash when, out of settings, when you click on 'remote login'
you can eventually get this to work but you will first have to enable all the settings from the command line using grdctl
this is awesome and cool and if you complain about it you will be told you are a bad person. even tho years ago you relied on vidalia or whatever vnc plugin in gnome and they fucking broke that without even telling anyone and then just didnt have remote desktop for years and you had to go back to using x11vnc
also you cant use headless remote desktop with wayland, period, unless you can also sit at the remote computer physically and click a button on the screen. this is how secure linux is, you cant even log into your own system. try that with windows.
you cant use rustdesk with wayland either it has the same issue, so first off, set your desktop to always use x11 regardless of if plasma or kde
so what does work?
if using kde set your desktop to autologin, lol ,because thats the only way youre getting in, this is super secure and since its linux nobody can hack your open terminal when you arent there
if gnome, you can now install rustdesk and use that to log in and out and even, yes, log in from the lock screen because of some miracle of rustdesk and gdm
or
you can configure x11vnc to run as root, accept connections from localhost only, and connect to it via ssh loopback
ala slackware 8
